CLASSOF57

Described by a nominator as a LISTSERV list meant to facilitate the reconnection and continued email contact between classmates of the Texas A&M University graduating class of 1957 as they were preparing for their 55th Reunion at College Station, Texas.

MPN-NET

MPN-NET is a discussion group for patients, family, friends, doctors and researchers to discuss clinical and nonclinical issues and advances pertaining to the Myeloproliferative Disorders, including essential thrombocythemia (ET), polycythemia vera (PV), primary myelofibrosis (PMF or MF), secondary myelofibrosis and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Described by a nominator as a "fair and equitable group – consistent, knowledgeable and reader-oriented."

POST-POLIO-MED

POST-POLIO-MED is a list for questions and answers to and from Post Polio Syndrome researchers, physicians and other Post-Polio Syndrome medical professionals, Polio survivors, family, friends, students and those who are interested in Post-Polio Syndrome. Described by nominators as the largest Post-Polio Syndrome email list in existence and a "valuable resource for a very large number of Polio survivors still alive all over the world."

CASBAR

In the words of a nominator, "The CASBAR provides a virtual bar for military aviators to gather and swap tales. It includes members from all services and conflicts as far back as WWII."

RATNET

A moderated list for the members of the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association, providing an easy and quick means to communicate with its membership of over 5000.

COPD-SUPPORT

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious affliction consisting of elements of emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthmatic bronchitis. This list provides support, education and a forum for the sharing of ideas and solutions in dealing with this affliction. It is not focused on activism regarding the affliction. A nominator notes that it has been one the very best run list with the least problems.

WORLDWIDEWORDS APRIL FINALIST

WORLDWIDEWORDS is an announce-only list for distributing Michael Quinion's weekly World Wide Words newsletters. They discuss the vagaries of the English language, including word histories, new words, the background to words in the news, and some of the problems of English usage. World Wide Words also attempts to answer questions on English language and usage.

IBMVM

This list is intended to provide a forum for discussion of topics relating to the IBM VM/ESA and z/VM operating systems. A nominator notes that the list offers the "Best communications since VMShare."

GUNROOM

The Gunroom is the home for a group of author Patrick O'Brian's readers to discuss his works and share insights and information about the British Navy and nautical world of the 1800s, obsolete and unfamiliar language, Maturin's medicine, natural history, politics, geography and history to enhance our enjoyment and understanding of O'Brian's books and characters.

ANOREXIAANDBULIMIA

The Anorexia and Bulimia list is a 12-step discussion support group for men and women who have anorexia or bulimia. The list offers access to online support and resources and welcomes all anorexic or bulimic with open arms into the group, stating: "We affirm daily that what we could never do alone, we can do together." One nominator states: "It truly plays a part in saving my life from this awful disease."

WTS

Working the Steps (WTS) is a year-long in-depth email study of the Twelve Steps of Overeaters Anonymous. Members actively work each step with their personal sponsor, the WTS Step Leader and one another. Membership is open to individuals with a desire to stop eating compulsively and who wish to work the Twelve Steps as a group.

MARCEDIT-L

Described by a nominator as a narrowly focused yet extremely helpful list for MARCEdit software users. The software's creator actively contributes to the list and solicits feedback on features that users would like to see in future versions.

THEBIGBOOK

The Big Book loop is a group where members of Overeaters Anonymous study a paragraph of the basic text of Alcoholics Anonymous. AA's Big Book has been used by millions to find a way out of alcoholic misery. With eating disorders and obesity on the rise, this book offers a solution to another major public health issue. Described by a nominator as a wonderfully supportive place with a membership of hundreds of people from all over the world.

RECOVERYMEDITATIONS

Recovery Meditations is an inspirational vignette e-mailed to a large list of subscribers daily. Each meditation is a vignette of the experience, strength and hope of a compulsive eater and all begin with a quotation and end with an affirmation of recovery.

KIDNEY-ONC

KIDNEY-ONC is an unmoderated discussion list for patients, family, friends, researchers and physicians to discuss clinical and nonclinical issues and advances pertaining to kidney cancer. This includes patient experiences, psychosocial issues, new research, clinical trials, alternative therapies and discussions of current treatment practices.

BDRA

The Blind Dog Rescue Alliance is a group of volunteers dedicated to rescuing and rehoming blind and visually impaired dogs. The list has more than 100 members and is described by a nominator as a wonderful group of volunteers.


Voting Rules

  • Polls close August 31, 2012, at 6 p.m. Central European Time.
  • You may vote once every 24 hours.
  • After voting, you will be locked out from voting again (on the computer you voted from) for 24 hours.
  • The voting consists of separate monthly contests. Counters will be reset at the beginning of each month.
  • L-Soft reserves the right to close some or all polls earlier than the posted end date.
  • The five finalists will be announced the fall of 2012.
